Music has long held a treasured place in the worship and witness of the Methodist tradition. At McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church, our Choir Ministry helps lead the congregation in worship through the great hymns of the faith, sacred choral music, and special music throughout the Christian year.
Under the direction of Bob Schimp, Director of Music, our choir serves as more than a musical ensemble—it is a ministry. Through song, the choir helps proclaim the message of Scripture, prepare our hearts for worship, and give voice to the prayers and praises of the congregation.
Our worship is traditional and rooted in the rich liturgical heritage of the Church. From the expectant hymns of Advent and the joy of Christmas, through the reflection of Lent and the triumph of Easter, to Pentecost and the seasons that follow, music helps tell the story of our faith year after year.
And at McKendree, the choir isn't the only one who sings! Congregational hymn singing is an important part of our worship together. Whether the hymn is one you have known all your life or one you are just learning, every voice is invited to join in praise.
“O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise!” — Charles Wesley
Handbell ministry is also a wonderful expression of Christian community. Each ringer is responsible for particular notes, which means every person—and every bell—has a part to play. What no one ringer can create alone becomes something beautiful when everyone works together. In that way, a handbell choir offers a lovely picture of the Church itself: many members, different gifts, one body, working together for the glory of God.
If you have a love for singing and a heart for worship, there is a place for you in the McKendree Choir and Handbell Ringers. Practice is weekly on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Loft. We welcome those who would like to share their gifts through this meaningful ministry.
